Yellow Swans Break Up:
The mighty (and mightily prolific) noise-drone duo Yellow Swans have called it quits after six years and upwards of 70 releases.
In an e-mail to Pitchfork, band member Pete Swanson writes, "There have been some murmurs floating around the web the last few weeks and I figure the time has come to clarify things. Yellow Swans will not be playing at all as a band beyond June of this year. There are no specific reasons why we've come to this point, but both Gabriel [Mindel Saloman] and I have decided that it's in our best interest to move on from the project. Neither of us have any intention to stop playing music anytime soon, but we will not be playing or performing with each other again."
However, the breakup doesn't mean that the band's bulging discography is finished. "We have been working on a final studio album that should be released at some point in 2009," adds Swanson. "And there are a handful of other releases that will become available after we've disbanded."
Yellow Swans formed in Portland in 2001 and moved to Oakland for a few years before returning to Oregon. The duo is often referred to as D. Yellow Swans, due to their habit of adding "D"-words to their name. Their website lists almost 40 examples in their discography, including Drill, Dove, Damaged, Declawed, and, best of all, Duh.
Using guitar, electronics, and vocals, they forged a sound both abrasive and ambient-- equal parts massive noise, drifting drone, and throbbing beat. The band collaborated with a wide range of international noisemakers, including Skaters, Mouthus, and Birchville Cat Motel, and released records on Load, Narnack, Important, and their own imprint, Collective Jyrk. Despite the huge discography, Yellow Swans have made only three studio albums, the most recent being the Pitchfork-recommended At All Ends, whose title gains new meaning with the duo's demise.
But Yellow Swans' ultimate end is still a few months away. "We have decided to fulfill previous commitments we've made, so no shows or releases are being cancelled," Swanson concludes. "Thanks are due to so many people I can't even begin. To anyone that's ever put us up, put on shows for us, bought our records, came to gigs, put out records, toured with us-- thanks a ton. I hope to see you all soon."
Yellow Swans dates:
04-21 Portland, OR - Backspace
05-03 Portland, OR - Someday Lounge
06-06 Minneapolis, MN - The Triple Rock
06-08 Iowa City, IA – The Picador
06-09 Chicago, IL - AV-Aerie
06-19 Barcelona, Spain - Sonar Festival -
Yellow Swans released "Bring the Neon War Home", their first release on Narnack and their First proper Album in August 2004. They have since released numerous projects on their own along with other independent labels Jyrk and LOAD. We wish the best to Pete and Gabriel and hope their music journeys continue to progress.

THETRIPWIRE.COM Presents: On The Cover - LANGHORNE SLIM -
Normally when we introduce you to a new On The Cover artist, we sit down and do a bit of research in order to prepare a bit of a biography to help familiarize our readers with their background. Well, Langhorne Slim typed it up better than we ever could, so here is his story, in his own words:
Outside of Philadelphia I was born and raised, and in the playground I spent quite a few of my younger days. At the time I had a preference for brunettes but years pass and we change. When my tendencies turned toward blondes I began to hear the call of the big rotten apple and at eighteen, away I went. Gone were the lonely, sweaty summer nights of PA. The crickets were still cricken' but not in my ears. I was in New York and I was looking for action. Some crave love, some seek danger but I was on the hunt for open mics and not to brag-I found 'em. In a section of the city once referred to as alphabet on the lower east side there lurks a lot of white guys with acoustic guitars. This minor mass of songsters would meet one, two and sometimes three times a week in the back of bars, smoking, drinking and sharing with each other our newest creations. It was there that I met some good friends and came of age beginning to play my own shows and tour.
In 2004, I met Malachi DeLorenzo and Paul Defiglia (aka "The War Eagles") and we recorded our first full length, When the Sun's Gone Down, for Narnack Records. A stone was stepped and two years later we were offered a deal to record with the now-defunct V2 Records. With an EP released (Engine, produced by Brian Deck) and a full-length recorded, we were feeling good. Then, one sunny day hanging out with Grandmom May and Grandpop Jack, the call came that V2 was no more. It was time to start looking for a new home.
The next thing you know we are shooting pool and sipping on Jameson down in the East Village with Kemado Records. I had found that home for myself as well as my new record, the record that we had made at Sam Kassirer's (keyboard player for Josh Ritter) Great North Sound Society Studio in Maine. It is now time, with great pride and immense relief that we detach our claws and send this sucker out there into the world.
I'm not sure that there's any other kind, but the songs I write are love songs. Some are literal, about specific events, people and relationships in my life; a form of therapy, self-help for the flowers and the shit along the road of life. Others come from a place far more mysterious. Either way, I'm in it to capture the feeling, the truth of an emotion, changing only names and events to protect the innocent. At the moment, my favorite songs on the album are "Diamonds & Gold", "Spinning Compass" and "Restless." Some came out of the blue, others took some sweat but if the feeling's there, then you've got something and it don't make a damn difference how it happened. I hope that you feel it.
This collection of songs represents our most comfortable, cohesive and soul-shaking music to date. It has been a great pleasure for me working with Sam, Malachi and Paul on this. And after all the good, bad and not so pretty all I can say is-please enjoy.
Love and Peace,
Langhorne -

LIONSGATE SIGNS DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH NARNACK RECORDS
DEAL INCLUDES GRAMMY® WINNING REGGAE ICON LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, and SANTA MONICA, CA (June 5, 2008) – Lionsgate continues to expand and diversify its music roster with the addition of Grammy® winner Lee “Scratch” Perry through a new distribution deal with independent record label Narnack Records, it was announced today by Lionsgate Music President Jay Faires.
The deal launches off with Perry’s upcoming album “Repentance,” which is co-produced by Andrew W.K. and features such guest artists as Moby, Don Fleming, Chris Stein of Blondie, Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt and several other notable acts.
About the deal, Faires said, “Narnack is another strong step for the music team as we replicate Lionsgate’s core mission to fill underserved niches. We’re excited to be launching the deal with the upcoming record by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.”
Vice President of TV Music and A&R Russell Ziecker stated that “Our deal with Narnack will expand our publishing outreach, while providing us with more firsthand resources for our film and television slots, utilizing Narnack’s diverse, multi-genre, and independent-spirited label roster.”
Lee “Scratch” Perry is a Grammy® award-winning artist and producer who was highly influential in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub music. In his infamous studio, The Black Ark, Perry produced some of the most significant artists in the history of reggae including the legendary Bob Marley & the Wailers. Beyond reggae, Perry worked with iconic rock group The Clash on their first LP in the US, producing the single “Complete Control” and co-writing the hit “Police and Thieves.” He was also featured on the #1 debut album Hello Nasty by the Beastie Boys, who were involved with the new documentary The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee "Scratch" Perry . Rolling Stone has hailed Perry as “the first mad-scientist producer” and Blender named the epic musician one of their Top 50 Rock Geniuses of All Time. As the first reggae producer to utilize drum machines and phasers, Lee “Scratch” Perry continues to keep his music ahead of the times and his ears tuned to the future.
Narnack Records is an independent record label that developed in NYC and Brooklyn’s underground music scene in 2001. Founded by Shahin Ewalt, who has been in the record industry for 10 years with many established labels, Narnack quickly became known for it’s A&R style of both developing new acts and fostering new projects with established legends. In March of 2007, the label moved operations to Los Angeles, which has enabled Narnack to strengthen its foundation with a newly revitalized infrastructure and visionary focus. Narnack has a cutting-edge catalog of releases ranging from post punk, experimental, garage, folk, indie rock, reggae and dance. The label touts international super acts such as Mark E. Smith of “The Fall”, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Guitar Wolf along with local giants The Coachwhips (S.F.), Restaurant (L.A.), Women & Children (L.A.), Langhorne Slim (NYC) and Parts and Labor (NYC). Upcoming releases include Restaurant’s “Returns to the Tomb of Guiliano Medidici” dropping September 30th, IRAN’s “Same Song Over & Over” (featuring members of TV on the Radio) out on October 28st, and Women and Children’s “Removed” dropping early next year.
